Winter Duck

1100 - 1335 Bright, some cloud, cold, WSW f1-3

Mostly a visit to see what was happening on the pits....first though an update on the entrance...they are now taking out aggregate from the quarry area but mostly in the evenings...I can only assume its for overnight roadworks or some such...around the weigh bridge area they have created a bund to 'dampen noise'....it looks most odd....so if you are visiting and come in the main entrance there should be limited truck movements but please be aware should the gate be open...

So...a mid morning visit with DH....always good to have company on the cold walk round....out of the wind it was fine and at times there was a small amount of warmth from the sun....but once in the wind it was cold...interestingly the three places en route that we needed to hang about were open areas....

Good views of a Fielfare/Starling flock too-ing and frow-ing in and out of the field south of island pit....no Redwings were found in this flock nor anywhere else on site today.

Slightly further east just before the metal bridge there were several Buntings.....Yellowhammers were quite prevalent here with a few Goldfinches in attendance.....a Siskin was in the large Oak trees by the bridge....

First duck up was a solitary male Mallard....but the Kingfisher warmed things up nicely almost immediately.  The totals seem to have somewhat shrunk....but never the less, here they are...

42 Tufted Duck, 50 Shoveler, 22 Pochard, 3 Teal, 24 Gadwall, 1 Wigeon, 63 Greylag Geese, 1 Water Rail....birds of the day though were.....2 female Goldeneye on west pit....
